Ready, Willing and Able

Ready, Willing and Able

Sometimes between the city council election and city government stories I get to spend an afternoon with somebody who really warms my heart with their attitude and story. Liz Cantine, a Palos Verdes woman who teaches children with special needs to dance, was just that kind of person. She was glowing, chipper, full of energy […]

I’ve started up our “Working Life” column again by following around some local Hermosans during their day-to-day life. It’s fun to get to peek into somebody else’s life for a day or two, and it’s a great way to get used to my new beat. The best part is, it’s part of my job!

On Assignment | Busted by the cops | Easy Reader News

I spent a Saturday evening with the police and shot this picture of a minor that was busted for having a water bottle of rum. Unfortunately because of the subject, I wasn’t able to publish it in the paper- but I personally love it. His mom was called and showed up very angry…

Stories like this are why I love being a journalist… Ed Iwasaka spends his day smiling. Even while he’s sweeping the floors or cleaning a bathroom, the maintenance operations worker at Hermosa View Elementary School always finds a way to laugh. “I was sweeping the floor and I made a ‘moo’ sound,” said Iwasaka. “The […]

Beach Valentines: Long Distance Young Love

Beach Valentines: Long Distance Young Love

When Jordan Dobler was in 7th grade, she attended the wrong English class. Even though the lesson wasn’t right for her she had found something else that was: Alec Amescua.

“That’s when I first saw her,” said Alec, now a high school junior. “She was the most beautiful girl I had seen and I knew that I liked her a lot.”

Soon the two were torn apart.

“She switched out of the class, which really made my heart sink,” said Alec. “So, we naturally didn’t talk much after that for awhile, but all of a sudden awhile later she got my phone number from a mutual friend and we started talking more, which grew into a relationship.”
